Overview

The Associate Director, Scientific Programs will provide scientific expertise, input, and assistance to the Director and AACR leadership regarding scientific meetings and conferences, workshops, think tanks, and other public and private events in support of the AACR mission and strategic plan. The Associate Director will collaborate with staff members across multiple departments, external vendors, and leading cancer researchers on the presentation of a portfolio of meetings, conferences, educational workshops, and innovation summits. The position requires ongoing collaborations with internal staff members across various AACR departments (marketing, fundraising, publishing, finance, meeting logistics, CME, etc.) to successfully execute the scientific programs according to AACR’s high standards. The Associate Director will assist leading cancer researchers in the development of the scientific content of these programs and become knowledgeable about the experts in the various subdisciplines of cancer research. This position requires sustained interactions with these scientific leaders to develop the programmatic goals and objectives, outcomes, and deliverables for these scientific programs, and this individual will also assist in the development of evaluation tools to assess the desired outcomes of these events. The Associate Director, Scientific Programs may also be responsible for special projects as needed.

Responsibilities

•Maintain a working knowledge of cancer research and related sciences and keep abreast of the latest developments in the cancer field.
•Recommend and implement new scientific initiatives in support of AACR’s mission and strategic plan to the Director and the CEO.
•Be responsible for the oversight and management of a team of scientific and support staff working on the execution of scientific programs.
•Serve as a primary staff liaison to AACR committees and/or task forces.
•Serve as a department liaison to internal committees and staff working groups.
•Support the Director in his interactions with internal and external stakeholders as needed.
•Work closely with Directors, as well as Deputy, Associate, and Assistant Directors from other departments, to enhance cross-departmental collaborations.
•Work with Director, Scientific Programs to maintain department policies and procedures.
•Work with Director, Scientific Programs to ensure the professional development of department staff.
•Support the Director, Scientific Programs by maintaining knowledge of meeting industry trends, education methodology and platforms, and funding issues that have potential impact on department programs.
•Implement special projects assigned by the CEO utilizing scientific expertise beyond those of the usual departmental responsibilities.

Qualifications

•Advanced scientific degree with expertise in basic, translational, and/or clinical cancer research (PhD, MD, and MD/PhD, or equivalent)
•A minimum of 7-10 years of relevant research experience, preferably at the postdoctoral level or beyond
•A minimum of 7-10 years of increasing management/administrative experience with at least 4 direct reports
•Ability to build, foster, and maintain relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
•Ability to work independently and in a diverse team environment
•Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time based across multiple projects while adhering to project timelines
•Ability to travel 15% per year
•Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and develop innovative, mission-driven projects
•Expertise in scientific writing and grant writing
•Experience in leadership positions, preferably in a non-profit organization
•Experience in managing direct reports
•Excellent administrative, organizational, and leadership skills
•Excellent customer service skills
•Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
•Excellent project management skills

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•Knowledge of project management and CRM a plus
