Publishing Division Profile:

The AACR Publishing Division is responsible for managing all editorial, production, and marketing activities associated with publication of the AACR’s nine academic peer- reviewed journals. These journals cover the entire spectrum of cancer research, from basic to clinical and molecular to population science.  In 2021, the journals published over 1900 original research articles and over 480 review and commentary articles.






The Managing Editor is responsible for managing the manuscript submission and review process, and for supporting editorial development of Cancer Research. Precise title and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.


•Work closely with the journal’s editors to provide support in determining editorial direction, evaluating, and improving content, and developing new areas or new types of content. Provide follow-through to ensure changes are implemented, integrating any new processes into back-office systems.
•Responsible for day-to-day management of the manuscript submission and peer review processes, and maintenance of the editorial board list and peer reviewer database.
•Hire, train, supervise, develop, and evaluate internal editorial staff
•Provide support in managing and evaluating the performance of any external contractors who provide editorial support
•Keep internal journal editor(s) and external Editors-in-Chief apprised of journal status and alert them to any problem areas or to journal academic Editors who may be causing delays in manuscript flow
•Plan, prepare materials for, and deliver presentations at Editorial Board Meetings, Editorial Retreats, and scheduled conference calls
•Analyze competitive journals and information products; identify key distinguishing characteristics; suggest changes to gain competitive advantage
•Draft correspondence for editors, such as manuscript solicitations and Editorial Board invitations
•Coordinate editorial review and resolution of potential ethical issues in submitted and published manuscripts
•Work with publications marketing staff to promote the assigned journals to readers and authors
  •Help to identify articles to promote, obtaining author and editor agreement on choices
  •Help to identify potentially relevant audiences and meetings for journal promotion; help select materials to send to meetings that support this effort
  •Provide direction for and review of ad copy, email blasts, and online banner ads
•Work with communications and media relations staff to promote journal content, coordinating press releases with the editor, managing embargo dates, etc.
•Work with internal staff and AACR’s online journal hosting vendor to develop and implement innovative electronic features and services for the journals
•Help develop the journal’s budget and monitor expenditures
•Work with production department to ensure smooth flow of manuscripts for publication and manage the order of placement as needed


•Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a scientific field
•Advanced degree a plus
•4 to 8 years of experience as a journal manager for scientific or other scholarly publications
•Experience with online manuscript submission and tracking systems, and electronic publishing processes
•Scientific background or knowledge, particularly in the areas of biomedical research
•Ability to interact effectively with external editors, authors, and reviewers, as well as with internal colleagues at all levels of the organization
•Proven record as a manager of both people and processes
•Excellent oral and written communication skills
•Good organizational and problem-solving skills
•Proficiency with MS Office suite of programs essential
