Overview

The Senior Coordinator, Public Relations, is a valuable member of the AACR’s public relations team. This individual will provide administrative, content development, and media relations support to communications initiatives that aim to increase the AACR’s visibility and thought leadership as the authoritative voice in cancer research. These initiatives include promoting the AACR’s scientific meetings, journals, and programs; policy and advocacy work; and philanthropic efforts.  The Senior Coordinator, Public Relations must have media relations experience, strong writing and organizational skills, and excellent attention to detail. The Senior Coordinator must also be a self-starter capable of handling multiple competing priorities, with the ability to exercise sound judgment and diplomacy when working with various internal and external stakeholders. Ideally, this individual would have experience in cancer advocacy/research or a related field. This position reports to the Deputy Director, Public Relations.

 

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the public relations team’s goal of increasing the quality and quantity of national, Philadelphia-regional, and international media placements through proactive media outreach.
• Write, edit, proofread, and distribute press releases, media advisories, media pitches, and other communications materials.
• Support the planning and management of AACR press programs at the organization’s major meetings and conferences, including media registration and customer service, press room logistics, and assistance with on-site and virtual media events.
• Assist with the development and distribution of conference media kits and related materials to registered journalists and other stakeholders.
• Manage media tracking and spearhead the analysis and reporting of the team’s results using the AACR’s media monitoring service, Cision, and other platforms as identified.
• Prepare media reports for select departments as well as key initiatives such as the AACR Annual Meeting and AACR Cancer Progress Report.
• Manage the team’s contact database to ensure up-to-date, accurate lists of reporters, public information officers, and other key stakeholders.
• Update the AACR’s online newsroom with press releases, media advisories, media coverage, and other content as needed.
• Work closely with the social media team to provide content for the AACR’s social platforms.
• Administer and monitor vendor contracts and media subscriptions for the Communications department.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed to support the public relations team and broader Communications department.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in public relations, specifically in media relations.
• Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills with the ability to translate complex science into lay-friendly communications for various audiences.
• Proficient in Cision or another media monitoring service that tracks large amounts of data spanning a multitude of projects.
• Excellent organizational and critical thinking skills with the ability to effectively handle multiple competing priorities.
• Ability to develop strong working relationships, both internally and externally.
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Experience updating website content is a plus.
• Knowledge of social media through a public relations lens is a plus.
• Experience working in a nonprofit, hospital, or health care institution and experience with cancer research/advocacy, government affairs, or fundraising public relations and/or communications is a plus.

 

Education Requirements:

 

• Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or related field.
