Job Summary:

 

This position is responsible for issue management, copyediting, production, and quality control of scientific journal content from acceptance through online and print publication.   This position requires the individual to work independently and possess good decision-making skills during the journal production process.  Oversee and manage vendor performance.

Responsibilities

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Manages issues and prepares assigned manuscripts for publication according to established AACR quality guidelines while meeting all production, printing, online publishing, and mailing deadlines:

  • Checks for consistency and accuracy of style in copyediting and composition and ensures all necessary components of manuscripts and issues are present.
  • Meets established deadlines consistently.
  • Oversees graphic design and manages submission of digital art, assuring acceptable quality and implementation of all art prior to publication.
  • Works with the managing editor and authors to select and/or obtain cover art according to the schedule; facilitates production of cover with AACR graphics staff.
  • Assures that all necessary documents are in-house prior to publication, including signed copyright forms, permissions, conflict of interest forms, and author contribution forms.
  • Identifies problems interfering with fulfillment of department’s goals and informs manager promptly.
  • Responsible for copyediting to conform with journal style, including detecting and correcting errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax; oversees copyediting by vendor to ensure style is consistent throughout articles and issues.
  • Maintains and updates publication schedules using journal production system.

Monitors established budgetary parameters:

  • Checks authors’ proofs to reduce changes and to monitor editing problems.
  • Monitors performance of composition provider and printer for quality and on-time performance.

Maintains online versions of the journal and online information about the journal:

  • Manages electronic files, TOCs, covers, highlighted articles.
  • Reviews online information about journal on hosting platform and on the journals’ website.

Performs other tasks as assigned by publications management.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of editorial production experience within a scientific or other scholarly publication.
  • Detail-oriented with a customer service approach to authors and editors.
  • Superior communications skills, verbal and written.  
  • Superior knowledge of grammar, style, scientific conventions.
  • Familiarity with printing and electronic publishing methods and procedures. 
  • Familiarity with CSE and AMA Style Manual; medical terminology a plus.

Education and Training:

 

  • Bachelor's degree or extensive equivalent experience

Technical Competencies and Special Skills:

  • Good computer skills; knowledge of submission and production tracking systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Familiarity with digital art formats.
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills.
