Overview

The Scientific Program Administrator will be charged with leading the annual execution of all AACR Academy activities, which in addition to the nomination and election of new classes of Fellows includes convening meetings of the AACR Academy to discuss timely and important scientific issues as well as coordinating an annual induction ceremony whereby all newly elected Fellows are formally inducted into the AACR Academy.

 

The position will also involve collaborating with AACR’s various internal departments to conceptualize and facilitate the generation of media coverage that highlights the scientific achievements of Fellows and how their discoveries have impacted cancer patient care. The position may also involve collaborating with AACR’s Science Policy and Government Affairs Washington, DC Office staff to mobilize AACR Fellows to comment on, support, or reject various governmental issues or proposed legislative initiatives that have implications for the cancer research community.

 

To accomplish all tasks associated with the position, the Scientific Program Administrator will work closely with the Scientific Programs and Strategic Initiatives team within the AACR’s Executive Office and the AACR Academy’s Steering Committee leadership body that is responsible for assisting with the administration of all relevant programs, activities, and initiatives pertaining to the AACR Academy.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage and utilize scientific expertise to support AACR’s mission and programs designed to drive the future scientific agenda of the organization
  • Facilitate and support effective communication internally between AACR departments and divisions, as well as externally between AACR and Fellows of the AACR Academy
  • Interact with AACR colleagues and AACR Fellows to organize events ranging in size from small committee meetings to large-scale scientific programs and Fellows of the AACR Academy induction ceremony events
  • Communicate regularly with cancer researchers, clinicians, and physician-scientists primarily via telephone, video conference, and email
  • Coordinate and administer the nomination and election process for all new classes of Fellows of the AACR Academy and all AACR Academy leadership positions
  • Ensure the timely completion of projects by determining priorities and tracking deadlines
  • Assist with the preparation of agendas, proposals, and any other necessary files related to the meetings and programs of the Fellows of the AACR Academy
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain AACR Academy documents and historical files
  • Update and maintain all AACR Academy webpage content
  • Travel to AACR Annual Meetings, selected AACR Special Conferences, and other events, as needed, to implement AACR Academy-led initiatives
  • Perform all essential duties and functions of the position and other related duties as assigned and as necessary

Qualifications

  • Eligible candidates must have a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant postdoctoral research experience and administrative or project management experience, preferably in the non-profit sector
  • Interested individuals must possess a passion and commitment to cancer and cancer-related sciences and possess the following attributes:
    • Broad, in-depth knowledge of cancer and cancer-related sciences
    • Precision in terms of judgement and the ability to navigate scientifically complicated tasks
    • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
    • Ability to build, foster, and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
    • Capability to manage time and prioritize tasks while adapting to diverse workloads and deadlines
    • Excellence in written and verbal communications
    • Precise attention to detail
    • Exceptional administrative and organizational skills
    • Desire to follow through on projects in a timely manner
    • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
    • High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to navigate technological software and platforms including virtual meeting platforms (i.e., Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.)
    • Knowledge of the scientific literature and trends in the cancer research field
    • Ability to travel to meetings and conferences as needed

 

Education Requirements

  • PhD, MD, MD,PhD, or equivalent degree in cancer research or a cancer-related science required
