Overview

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about cancer research and who excels at scientific communication to join the editorial team of its highly cited and highly ranked publication, Cancer Discovery.

Cancer Discovery is among the world’s most preeminent cancer journals, publishing major advances in basic, translational, and clinical research, including clinical trials. Cancer Discovery is an essential information resource that also publishes highly regarded news stories—including pieces on advances in cancer research and treatment, technology, business, people and places, therapeutics-related FDA activity, science and public policy, and research funding—as well as review articles, perspectives and commentaries, and summaries of important findings in other journals.

 

Position Summary:

 

The Assistant/Associate Editor, Cancer Discovery, will report to the Executive Editor and will work from an AACR office in Boston or Philadelphia.  The Assistant/Associate Editor will work within an established editorial team to handle manuscript submissions throughout the review process and promote the submission of high-quality content to the journal through outreach and networking efforts. The Assistant/Associate Editor will also oversee the popular “Research Watch” and “In this Issue” sections of the journal, which includes writing and editing summaries and managing freelance writers for weekly online and monthly print deadlines. As a key member of the Publications group, the Assistant Editor, Cancer Discovery, will be deeply engaged with the activities of the AACR and have a highly visible role in the cancer research community.

Responsibilities

 

  • Manages the peer-review process and ensures high-quality and timely handling of submissions.
  • Oversees the “Research Watch” and “In this Issue” sections of Cancer Discovery.
  • Communicates with authors, editors, reviewers, and readers regarding all aspects of the journal.
  • Assists with development, composition, and editing of content.
  • Stays abreast of the field and develops excellent relationships with the research community.
  • Collaborates with the in-house editorial team to identify and attract exceptional original research, reviews, and special feature content in the broad field of oncology.
  • Represents the journal and the AACR at scientific meetings and institutional visits.
  • Provides strategic input for monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on the performance of Cancer Discovery and activities of competing journals.
  • Collaborates with the staff of the other AACR journals, production, and marketing to ensure good communication and promotion of synergistic opportunities.

Qualifications

  • PhD in a biomedical or clinical science (prior editorial experience is not required; title commensurate with experience).
  • Expertise in cancer biology and/or medicine.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate directly and professionally with researchers and to translate technical scientific content for scientists working in other disciplines.
  • Independent and self-motivated, with consistent demonstration of initiative and commitment.
  • Ability to travel to relevant scientific meetings and research institutes.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
