The Director of Continuing Medical Education (CME) at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) leads the strategic direction, accreditation compliance, and operational execution of oncology-focused CME activities.
This role ensures that AACR’s CME offerings translate cutting-edge cancer research into clinical practice, and deliver high-quality, impactful oncology education that supports the organization’s mission to improve patient care through lifelong learning for healthcare professionals.
• Develop and maintain understanding of AACR’s priorities for education.
• Lead needs assessments and gap analyses to inform program design and measure educational outcomes.
• Coordinate landscape analyses and monitor trends in oncology, adult learning, and CME regulations to ensure innovation and relevance in AACR’s educational offerings.
• Identify funding opportunities from commercial supporters (pharmaceutical and medical device industries) and other supporters of CME that align with AACR’s education priorities.
• Identify and maintain relationships with key personnel within pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
• Identify and maintain relationships with collaborators including medical education companies and other providers of medical education.
• With AACR’s Foundation and other internal teams, conceptualize a funding strategy for CME programs.
• Direct all phases of the education grant development process and submission of grant proposals to potential funding organizations; including development of LORs, budgets, and entry of all relevant information into grant portals.
• Ensure that grants funded programs meet compliance and reporting standards, and that reports and reconciliations are completed and submitted to funders according to their deadlines.
• Oversee the CME accreditation process, including documentation, reporting, and reaccreditation.
• Ensure full compliance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) criteria and standards for integrity and independence in CME.
• Serve as the primary liaison to ACCME and represent AACR in national CME and oncology education forums.
• Develop and maintain internal Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs), process maps, and project management plans.
• Supervise CME staff and manage budgets, timelines, and vendor relationships.
• Perform any other duties requested by the VP of Education.
• Master’s degree in education, public health, healthcare administration, or related field; oncology or biomedical background preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in CME, with at least 3 years in a leadership or accreditation role.
• Certified Continuing Medical Education Professional (CCMEP)
• Strong knowledge of CME, including identification of gaps and needs, Moore’s levels of outcome assessment, and different teaching modalities.
• Deep understanding of ACCME standards and oncology-specific educational needs.
• Familiarity with the pharmaceutical industry and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain contacts
• Knowledge of CME requirements in countries outside the U.S.
• Understanding of the grant submission process.
• Demonstrated success in securing funding for a variety of CME programs.
• Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.
• Ability to travel.
Preferred Certifications:
• Oncology-related credentials or experience in cancer research or clinical oncology
• Project Management Professional (PMP)
